The spacecraft was orbiting around the Moon at a height of 100 km from the lunar surface for chemical, mineralogical and photo-geologic mapping of the Moon. Chandrayaan - 1 was launched by ISRO in 2008 and operated until 2009. It consisted of an orbiter and an impactor, and discovered water molecules in lunar soil and mapped the Moon's surface and composition.
