The Shanti Mantras, or Pancha Shanti mantras, are Hindu prayers for peace ( shanti ) found in the Upanishads. Generally, they are recited at the beginning and end of religious rituals and discourses. Shanti specifically refers to a state of inner rather than outer peace . Since cultivating a sense of inner peace is the central goal of most spiritual practices, shanti is an important concept across religious and spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and yoga. Shanti Mantras are prayers for Peace. They are often recited at the beginning and at the end of religious ceremonies or rituals in Hinduism. Shanti Mantras are often found in the Upanishads, where they are recited to calm the mind of the reciter and the environment around him. Shanti means “peace,” and also has a wide range of connotations including harmony, silence, forgiveness, protection, comfort, and even abundance. We chant Shanti three times at the beginning and end of any Yoga practice and each of these three Shantis has a special meaning.
