Learn how a Star Delta Starter works with control and power circuit diagrams. Reduce motor starting current with this easy-to-follow guide. Star Delta Starter Definition: A star delta starter is used for starting 3 phase induction motors, minimizing initial electrical overload by starting in a ‘star’ configuration and then switching to ‘delta’ after reaching a certain speed. The Star Delta Starter connects the three stator windings in star across the rated supply voltage at the time of starting. After the motor attains speed the same windings are connected in delta across the same supply voltage through a change over switch. This is shown in Fig. 1. A Star Delta Starter is an electrical motor starter that minimizes the initial current drawn by the motor during startup. It involves connecting the motor in a star configuration for starting and then switching to a delta configuration for normal operation.
