It consists of 126 bones in humans and has six major regions: shoulder girdle, arms, hands, pelvis, thighs and feet. Appendicular Skeleton: Meaning, Diagram, Functions Appendicular Skeleton: A human body is made up of approximately 206 to 213 different bones. These bones are part of the skeleton that helps us in every movement and the organs in our body. The skeleton or the bone structure is of two categories: Axial skeleton and Appendicular skeleton. The appendicular skeleton enables movement and interaction with the environment, making it vital for daily activities. Its design supports a wide range of motions, from walking to precise hand movements. The appendicular skeleton is composed of the bones of the upper limbs (which function to grasp and manipulate objects) and the lower limbs (which permit locomotion). It also includes the pectoral girdle, or shoulder girdle, that attaches the upper limbs to the body, and the pelvic girdle that attaches the lower limbs to the body (Figure 1).
