The temple boasts some interesting architecture, a couple of fine Buddha images and two old chedi (stupas) in the original Hariphunchai style. The compound lay derelict until Khru Ba Sriwichai, a famous Northern Thai monk, ordered renovations in the 1930s. Wat Phrathat Haripunchai Woramahawihan is situated in the centre of Lamphun city and surrounded by roads on all sides: Asadharos Road to the North, Chaimongkol Road to the South, Ropmueang Road to the East, and Inthayongyos Road to the West. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is believed to have been founded in 1150 by the reigning king of the Hariphunchai Kingdom. The site is significant because according to legend it was the location of the palace of the first ruler of the Hariphunchai Dynasty, Queen Chammathewi.
