Its origin is usually attributed to Edward Jenner (Fig. 1.1), who discovered in 1796 that cowpox, or vaccinia, induced protection against human smallpox, an often fatal disease. Immunology is the study of the immune system that consists of several types of immunity such as cell-mediated immunity and humoral immunity, diseases related to the immune system, and the physiological and biological functioning of the immune system. Immunology is a rapidly advancing field with many specialized areas of study. The complexity with which the immune system combats infection rivals the complexity of the numerous types of microbes that can cause disease. This article does not aim to provide an in-depth review of immunology.
