The vulva (pudendum) refers to the external female genitalia. Its functions are threefold: Acts as sensory tissue during sexual intercourse Assists in micturition by directing the flow of urine Protects the internal female reproductive tract from infection. In this article, we shall look at the anatomy of the vulva – its structure, blood supply and innervation. The vulva is the portion of the external female genitalia that surrounds the opening to the vagina , which collectively consists of the labia majora, the labia minora, clitoris, vestibule of the vagina , bulb of the vestibule, and the glands of Bartholin. The vulva includes the external female genital structures. Vulvar anatomy contains several structures, such as the labia, vaginal and urethral openings, and clitoris. 1 Sometimes, the external genitalia are also called the pudendum.
