Sushruta is fondly known as the “Father of Indian Surgery” and was a physician and surgeon in ancient India. He is also known as the “Father of Plastic Surgery” as he invented, developed and enlightened the world with surgical procedures. Sushruta considered surgery the first and foremost branch of medicine and stated that surgery has the superior advantage of producing instantaneous effects by means of surgical instruments and appliances and hence is the highest in value of all the medical tantras. Among the many jewels of ancient India’s scientific and spiritual heritage, Suśruta shines as a pioneer of healing. Revered as the Father of Surgery, he authored the Suśruta Saṃhitā, a Sanskrit text that laid the foundations of surgical practice more than 2,000 years ago. Sushruta, known as the "Father of Surgery," was an ancient Indian physician and surgeon who lived around 600 BCE. He wrote the "Sushruta Samhita," one of the earliest medical texts, which greatly influenced medicine and surgery worldwide.
